Heritage and History of Hanover County Inc.

Preserving and promoting the history of Hanover County

Who are we?

Heritage and History of Hanover County, Inc. was chartered in 2004 to embark on a series of publishing ventures to introduce the public to Hanover's historic role in our nation's past.

History is the process of change, wrought by the famous and the obscure. Within the boundaries of Hanover County we have evidence of native American power struggles, the impact of war, revolutions in science and industry, slave insurretions, and the drama of everyday life. Here are just some of the courtesy people who lived in Hanover County and have made an impact on our nation’s history:

  • Samuel Davies and Religious Freedom
  • Thomas Nelson and Independence
  • Edmund Ruffin and Agriculture
  • Eunice Bundy and Education

Hundreds of Hanoverians have embraced this project. HHHC has been seen making the rounds of the county, setting up booths at fairs, and hosting town hall meetings and luncheons to introduce ourselves to the community. In addition to multiple community meetings, HHHC met with town and county officials and members of Hanover’s African-American community. We have also manned booths at Hanover Heritage Day, the Chamber of Commerceis Business Showcase and the Hanover Tomato Festival.  Please join our efforts to document our important history!

Hanover Rotary Clubs Support Project

This summer Hanover County’s two Rotary clubs joined hands in support of this worthwhile book project. Mechnanicsville Rotary led the effort and brought along Mechanicsville Wal-Mart to ensure that we met our development goals for the fiscal year. Thank you Rotary and Wal-Mart!

Executive and Editorial Committees Meet

Project Coordinator Mark Howell convened these two committees for an update on the project. Author Martha McCartney has written 3 chapters and publishers and printers are in place. Late Spring 2008 is the estimated arrival of the much anticipated work.

How You Can Help

We invite you to be a part of this important story.

Your valuable contribution of information, time and/or money will help us preserve our heritage and history for future generations. Your tax-deductible contribution will help us develop
publications, school lesson plans and electronic media to ensure that Hanover’s past is not only saved but used, as well.

Information: Since Hanover County is a “burned” county (ie, many of its records were destroyed during the Civil War), we are constantly on the lookout for information about our county to help fill in the gaps. Please take a look through that old trunk in the attic, scour through those musty boxes and pick over those top book shelves for documents and photographs that relate to Hanover.

Volunteer: Have some time to spare? We could certainly use your help in putting this project together. If you think you can lend your expertise to the effort, please give Mark Howell a call at (804) 852-1810.

Financial: PLEASE MAKE YOUR GIFT NOW TO HELP US MEET OUR GOAL! Your financial donation is critical in helping us produce a book that represents the county in a manner that it truly deserves. Considering the importance of Hanover to Virginia’s (and the nation’s) history, we deserve nothing less!
